Tybo Talks… Who Deserves to Win?

Welcome once again to Tybo’s Talks! I am Tybo, and I’m sure by now you know that I am the ‘Five Star General’ of this operation we call SLTD Wrestling. The Royal Rumble is one of my favorite events of the year, so I wasn’t going to let it pass without writing something.

As we are just days away from this year’s Royal Rumble match and the official start to the road you Wrestlemania, I thought I would write a little something about who could be the most deserving superstar on the WWE roster to headline ‘the grandest stage of them all’ Wrestlemania.

No one can deny the shear amount of star power involved in this year’s Royal Rumble match. This could potentially be the most star studded Royal Rumble match in recent years, and that is just with the talent that has been announced. Just the inclusion of The Undertaker, Brock Lesner and Goldberg has already amped up the stakes to new heights.

Then with the endless potential for surprise entrants, with everyone from ‘Broken’ Matt Hardy teasing his involvement on his Facebook page. Kenny Omega seemingly being a possible entrant, with teasers from the likes of John Cena, Seth Rollins (teasing a huge debut) and even Omega himself. Then there is of course the fact that this year’s Rumble is in Shawn Michaels hometown, it wouldn’t be a stretch of the imagination for HBK to make an appearance. Not to mention the news being broke by ESPN.com that the first inductee into this year’s Hall of Fame is Kurt Angle, the Olympic gold medalist could easily be not only the shock of the night but the crowd pop of the night too.

Now don’t get me wrong, I would love any of this to happen, especially the return of Kurt Angle, but do any of the superstars I have mentioned deserve to win and headline Wrestlemania? Honestly, no I don’t think they do.

In my opinion I think having a ‘part timer’ win the Royal Rumble is never a good idea. I don’t think it’s fair to the fans who go to the shows and watch every week at home to only see their number one contender sparingly going into Wrestlemania. To try and build an unmissable feud between the champion and a ‘part timer’ who shows up 3-4 times in the next two months never really works very well in my eyes. That being said the interest garnered from having The Undertaker, or Goldberg as your number one contender leading into Wrestlemania could be too huge of an opportunity for WWE to pass up though.

In the same breath, I don’t think a debuting or re-debuting superstar should walk into a push so strong that they are headlining the biggest show of the year in their first three months. It is completely unfair to the superstars who have carried the company throughout 2016 and into 2017. That is why I think the most deserving winner of the Royal Rumble this year must be a solid main stay talent.

There is a handful of talent that has stood out in my eyes this year that could easily make the jump to the main event, and potentially have a career defining Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, and cement themselves in the main event and title picture for the next few years. Some are even predicting that Braun Strowman will win it this year.

The New Day have already had a career defining year as the longest reigning Tag Team Champions in WWE history, but if WWE was to brake them up who would be the standout star? I think most would say Big E, personally I think Kofi (and Woods agrees) could slide into the Universal Championship picture with more ease that E or Woods. Kofi Kingston has been around for a long time and deserves to be higher on the card. Give him a dark edgier gimmick and he could be money. Who remembers his rivalry with Randy Orton?

There is no doubt this has been the year of Jericho. He has got Owens over as a believable champion, he has often been the best thing on Raw every week and well… he has The List! It’s clear that WWE are building towards Owens vs Jericho, but does that mean that Y2J is winning the Rumble and heading into Wrestlemania as the number one contender and facing his best friend Kevin Owens? Jericho certainly deserves it, and being a Royal Rumble winner is the only thing missing from Jericho’s undeniable Hall of Fame career.

Aside from everyone talking about Styles phenomenal (no pun intended) debut year and him being the face of Smackdown Live, the standout star of Team Blue has un-doubt ably been The Miz. He has hit a whole new level in everything he does since the brand split. I have always been a fan of The Miz, but the second half of 2016 has been his best in the ten plus years he has been in WWE. The Miz in my eyes is the best heel on SDLive and has been since his heartfelt promo in ‘Talking Smack’. Although he has been to the top of the mountain before, when he headlined against John Cena he was almost an afterthought with the impending rivalry between Cena and The Rock. This is an all new more intense Miz and with his beautiful wife Maryse by his side he could catapult his career to all new heights pulling of the impossible and upset victory over 29 other superstars and walk out Royal Rumble 2017 with the main event of Wrestlemania in his future.

So, there are some of the guys I think deserve to win the big one, but who would you like to see in the main event of the Superbowl of wrestling? There is one thing we can all agree on, and that’s this year’s Royal Rumble could be anyone’s!
