This coming Wednesday, Lucha Underground will present the 2-hour season finale called “Ultima Lucha Dos”. It has been going on for the past 2 weeks but this show, Part 3 of a 3 Part season finale will have the main events and will wrap up all the storylines before heading into season 3 in either fall of 2016 or winter of 2017.
The main event features the Lucha Underground champion, the “Monster” Matanza Cueto taking on one of the hottest wrestlers in the world right now, Pentagon Jr. Pentagon is ready for payback after suffering a hellacious beating at the hands of Matanza during their Lucha Underground title match during the spring. He had to go through a “Six To Survive” six-way match just to get into this match. As well as his success in Lucha Underground, Pentagon has also won the Rey de Reyes and the AAA Latin American title in Mexico. Matanza has demolished all competition he has faced since entering Lucha Underground at “Aztec Warfare” and winning the title. He has mowed through Rey Mysterio, Fenix, Prince Puma, Mil Muertes, as well as his “Ultima Lucha” opponent, Pentagon Jr. This is expected to be a fight like no other ever seen at the Temple. 2016 has been Pentagon Jr’s year and it’s possible he could end 2016 as both the Lucha Underground AND AAA Mega Champion. I expect a Pentagon Jr. win.
There will be another title match tomorrow night as the Lucha Underground Trios titles will be defended by the current champions, “The Worldwide Underground” Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans and P.J. Black going against “The Lucha Super-Friends”, Aerostar, Drago, and Fenix. The challengers seem like a team that just came together due to their rivalries with each member of the Worldwide Underground and without a match together as a team could hinder them. The Worldwide Underground have been on a roll themselves after upsetting Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma and Dragon Azteca. The Worldwide Underground’s experience and dastardly ways that sent them to the titles will be enough to overcome the individual talent of Aerostar, Drago, and Fenix. At Lucha Underground’s biggest show, at least one title has to stay with the current holders.
One of the best things about Lucha Underground is the talent in their women’s division and it will be on full display as “The Perfect Woman” Taya will take on “The Baddest Bitch in the Temple” Ivelisse in a grudge match. This has been a long time brewing as Taya and her group “The Worldwide Underground” co-horts defeated Ivelisse and her partner Son of Havoc in under-handed ways to keep their Trios titles. They’ve been on separate sides in multi-person, trios and tag matches, but never had a one-on-one match until now. Both work a very stiff style and could very well be the match of the night. Ivelisse has still been rebounding from various ailments, but has looked good in recent weeks. I have to pick Taya because of her willingness to do whatever it takes to get a win and the momentum that her and her Worldwide Underground group have had since winning the Trios title. Plus, I like Taya better, so there!
Finally, we have a Lucha Underground “dream match” between Prince Puma and Rey Mysterio Jr. Puma is the face of the franchise for Lucha Underground, with him being the 1st ever Lucha Underground champion and being really the one who dominated all the marketing material put out by Lucha Underground and the El Rey Network during season 1. Rey is well, Rey Mysterio. He basically brought the Lucha Libre style to the U.S., multiple-time World Champion in WWE and 1st ballot Hall of Famer, whenever he retires. Puma and Rey developed a friendship, and then a team along with Dragon Azteca Jr. that got them the Trios titles. That “dream team” ended up losing twice to the Worldwide Underground and sent Puma spiraling out of control and showing the world a level of frustration that had not been previously seen by the fans. He challenged Rey to a match at Ultima Lucha to see if he has what it takes to become “The King” of Lucha Libre. Mysterio quickly accepted out of respect. There is nothing on the line except for pride. Both are fan favorites and everyone could tell that when both were in the ring together and chants of “Let’s Go Puma” and “Let’s Go Rey” were filling the Temple. Puma works a much faster than Rey is accustomed to these days, but Rey is Rey, he knows everything. Rey Mysterio will come out of this dream match the winner, but Puma will go from star territory into “super-star” territory.
From top to bottom, Ultima Lucha Dos could be the best wrestling card of the entire year. It is one that is surely not to be missed. It comes on the El Rey Network this coming Wednesday, July 20th from 8 EST- 10 EST.
