The rumours have been running rampant this week, that in the tag-team match between Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper & Bray Wyatt at SummerSlam, we’ll be witnessing a heel turn from either Ambrose or Reigns in the match, most likely resulting in the newly re-established Wyatt Family gaining a victory. Most people think Ambrose will be the one to make the turn.
To be honest, I would prefer to see Ambrose and Reigns both stay babyface, because I think it works best for them right now, considering what the title picture looks like at the moment. Roman Reigns really looks like he’s gearing up to be the company’s next big hero, maybe even following in the footsteps of John Cena.
Not only that, but his limited (while vastly improving) mic skills may offer him a disadvantage should he come face-to-face with some of the better talkers, heel or face, on the roster. As a good guy, he basically just has to wait until his opponent finishes talking, walk out to a big pop from the crowd, say a few lines and finish it off with a superman punch. His physicality is definitely his stronger suit, which I think is better for him as a fan favourite.
Out of the two, Dean Ambrose would definitely hit his stride as a heel, considering the chaotic nature of his character doesn’t need to be vastly changed by such a development. His speaking skills are almost unmatched in today’s WWE, and he would definitely make a believable top heel, whether he’s facing off against Orton, Cena, Cesaro, Roman Reigns or even Brock Lesnar.
I do love Ambrose’s character right now though, and the fact that he’s pretty much a lone wolf whenever Roman Reigns isn’t around means it wouldn’t be very believable to see him teaming up with former enemies like Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Sheamus and King Barrett for the sake of a simple six-man tag main event on Raw, because you just know something like that will headline the night after SummerSlam. As long as they avoid those, I guess you could say plot holes, in Ambrose’s character, then I guess I would be up for a heel turn.
Even then, no matter who turns in this scenario, the one who does is going to miss out. If John Cena does win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam, I don’t think it’s going to be longer than 24 hours before Sheamus cashes in and wins the title from him, making him the top heel for the next few months, at least until Survivor Series. So whether it’s Sheamus or Seth Rollins at the top of the division, we’re still not going to see any heel vs. heel main events, so whoever it is will have to slum it in the mid-card.
Assuming the Ambrose/Reigns feud lasts at least two months, the heel in this storyline would be relegated to a lesser spot on the card, while the face would presumably be thrown into a main event rivalry with the champion. That’s why I don’t want either of them to turn. I don’t see Roman Reigns turning heel any time soon, which means if it’s anybody suffering the brunt of a rivalry between the two, it’s Ambrose.
If Sheamus does actually beat Cena for the title like I suggested, Reigns is going to be the one to dethrone him and carry the title into WrestleMania season for a triple threat Shield main event. Reigns goes in as the babyface champion, Rollins goes in as the heel Royal Rumble winner and Ambrose goes in as the face/tweener third wheel who earned his way into the match at Elimination Chamber.
If that match happens, and I think we all want it to, then it wouldn’t be quite as entertaining if Ambrose, or Reigns for that matter, was to turn heel beforehand, even if Rollins eventually turns face. Let’s hope WWE does things the right way and puts some thought into the way this explosive ‘Mania main event is booked.
That’ll do it for me, folks, be sure to check out the site in the coming week for some great coverage for WWE SummerSlam. We have some fantastic writers here, and they’re all very passionate, so be sure to take a look at what they have to say. It’s always greatly appreciated!
