Enzo and Cass are the most over tag team in the WWE, and you can’t teach that!
Unfortunately, however, the two haven’t teamed up since the Survivor Series tag match. It’s obvious WWE have been pushing Cass in singles competition, such as his participation in the Universal Title Fatal-4-Way. Furthermore, due to a legitimate injury, Enzo has been wheelchair-bound for the past few weeks.
This trajectory seems to suggest that WWE is preparing to transition Cass into singles competition – which means Enzo may be out of a job. Unless WWE plays to Enzo’s strength and stops him from getting lost in the crowd.
Here’s a handful of ways they can do just that:
Cruiserweight Division
Weighing in at 200lbs, Enzo is a perfect fit for 205 Live and the cruiserweight division.
Currently, the division – despite the great talent and the introduction of a heel Neville – is still underperforming with mainstream audiences. Enzo’s mic skills can turn any crowd and that’s exactly what the division needs. It needs someone the crowd can truly get behind, and considering how over he is, Enzo is an easy pick. His in-ring skills aren’t polished like the division’s other competitors, but the fact he’s so over makes him a major player.
Unfortunately, his in-ring skills may mean he won’t get a cruiserweight title run, but instead of elevating the belt, he can be used to elevate the other talent. At the moment many of the competitors in the division are putting on ‘filler’ matches with no real story. This is especially the case with many of the heels, such as Tony Nesse or Mustafa Ali.
A program with one of WWE’s most popular talents will surely elevate these superstars, but also help Enzo develop his own in-ring ability by working some of the best athletes in the company.
Comedy Character
Not only are Enzo’s promos entertaining, they appear genuine, which sets him apart from the rest of his peers. He oozes confidence in live and pre-taped segments. Few superstars can make WWE’s comedy segments work -don’t get me started on Golden Truth and The Shining Stars – but Enzo always seems to make them work.
The last true comedy character WWE had was Santino Marella but since his release, the role is up for grabs.
This may not seem to be the most prestigious job, but being the comic-relief on an episode of RAW, which has become harder to get through, is a blessing. This role might even get Enzo more over with the fans – potentially putting him in a position similar to Zack Ryder, which may result in a mid-card title run.
Backstage Role
Although backstage roles are usually reserved for veterans, Enzo’s skills make him a shoo-in as a promo coach. This is a lot of WWE’s young talent’s (especially those just called up from NXT) struggle on the mic. This is obvious with the likes of American Alpha or TJ Perkins, who are still getting used to WWE’s scripted promos.
WWE’s development system does have a ‘finishing class’ to help competitors move to the main roster. Placing Enzo as a promo coach alongside Ryan Katz will help newer talent flourish when they move to the main roster. This is as, on the main roster, your in-ring skills aren’t enough to get competitors over. Talent need to connect with the audience through character work, proven by Apollo Crew’s lack of a push when reaching the main roster.
Manager
This is the most likely, and best-suited role for Enzo, who has mic skills on par with Paul Heyman and the charisma of Jimmy Hart. The role of a manager is to help put over or attract heat for another wrestler, and Enzo could easily do this. When they first moved to main, Enzo essentially took on this role, as Cass was clearly struggling.
With Cass being pushed more as a singles competitor and Enzo injured, WWE could easily transition Enzo into the role. His presence would help fans get used to a singles Cass and allow Cass to concentrate on perfecting his in-ring skills. Furthermore, as most managers are heels, it would be refreshing to see Enzo have a heel run.
This would stop him from becoming stale, and would greatly benefit the talent he is managing at the time.
Although it would be great to continue seeing Enzo perform in the ring, if WWE decided to split Enzo and Cass up, it would be a shame to see Enzo being lost in the shuffle. Therefore any role other than a jobber would be great for Enzo. The most likely would be as a manager, and with the quality Enzo has, it’s not hard to imagine him becoming a Hall of Famer as a such. Putting him in the same class as the likes of Mr. Fuji and Paul Bearer.
