Daniel Bryan recently announced that Smackdown Live would be introducing its own Tag Team Titles, but who should be the first champions to hold the titles?
Chad Gable & Jason Jordan are the obvious fan favourites, but I wouldn’t necessarily give them the tag team titles straight away. Let’s take a look at the teams we currently have on Smackdown.
The Uso’s. Fans still enjoy the exciting Samoan team, and all in all, they are still an entertaining pair, I think people are a little bored of them. That is nothing to discredit the workrate of the ‘Brothers ‘Uce’, just they rarely showcase any personality, which often hurts them. I’d welcome more mic time and promos for them, and I know they don’t have the mic skills of their highly famous relative, but it wouldn’t do any harm for them show some charisma.
Breezeango. A team thrown together by sheer lack of creative direction for either of them, especially Tyler Breeze who bar a short lived feud with Dolph Ziggler, has never been given a fair shot on the main roster since his arrival.
It begs the question why WWE even promoted Breeze from NXT without a plan whatsoever. Fandango seems to have peaked early, way too early, but the pairing with Breeze could work.
Both guys have similar gimmicks in they are egotistical, vain and over confident in their own looks and talent. The downward spiral of both lead them to becoming comedy characters alongside Goldust & R-Truth, but since ditching their respective duos to become a team, have attempted to branch away from the comedy side of their work.
The Ascension. It’s hard to believe that they were the longest reigning NXT Tag Team Champions, because like Tyler Breeze, have never been given any sort of credibility on the main roster. Creative have offered them nothing to work with minus a ‘are they/aren’t they’ stable with Cody ‘Stardust’ Rhodes, which ultimately amounted to nothing.
I’d personally book them to be monster, dominating heels, similar to Gallows/Anderson on Raw in the sense that they take no prisoners and aren’t to be taken lightly, ever.
The Vaudevillains. It seems to be a recurring theme with NXT talents being promoted with no long-term plan, but at least in the case of The Vaudevillains, they’ve been given some decent exposure on WWE television.
You could point the finger at many aspects of this team as to why they aren’t at the level they should be, and one of my main gripes is their theme music, it doesn’t warrant a cheer or a boo, it makes fans groan and go silent. They’re good in the ring, have a decent gimmick, yet something just doesn’t make them stand out, or make fans look forward to seeing them,
I liked the idea of Aiden English singing before matches, it gave them real heat and fans wanted to see them get beaten, which is much better than fans not wanting to see them at all.
Granted, when you compare the Tag Teams of Smackdown Live to those of Raw, it’s highly uneven.
Whilst Smackdown have some decent teams, Raw has the pick of not only the most popular, but the most entertaining in The New Day, Dudley Boys and of course the hottest tag team in pro wrestling right now, Enzo Amore & Big Cass.
Do any of the Smackdown tag teams require a gimmick change? I don’t think so, although a different character direction would help some of them hugely.
We need to see more of Jordan & Gable, we need to see The Ascension as a force rather than a farce, and we need to believe in The Uso’s again.
As for who should hold the tag team titles, The Vaudevillains would be my choice as first holders, simply because they’re almost ‘there’ but need that one factor, that bragging right over the other teams.
I feel being Tag Team Champions could bring out their arrogance, which is loosely what their gimmick is based on, and make them a ‘we’re better than you’ team.
I feel American Alpha (Gable & Jordan) could chase the Tag Team Titles right up until Wrestlemania, and have the big payoff victory which would also give Smackdown a chance to really showcase them and get the fans behind them. As a fan, I always preferred seeing my favourites as the challengers, it’s more exciting, on the edge of your seat viewing.
While you have 2 of the team competing for the Titles, the other Tag Teams could rotate continuously for the chance to be number 1 contenders, which would again give those teams a chance to showcase themselves and give them plenty of exposure for the fans.
The future of Tag Team wrestling on Smackdown doesn’t look enthralling, but it could be. With the right development, the correct booking and some creative tweaks, we could make some very good teams representing the blue brand, and we could be witnessing the future stars being moulding right in front of us.
Who is YOUR favourite tag team on Smackdown? Do you think The Vaudevillains should be the first Tag Team Champions?
