With the Battleground “special event” taking place this past Sunday, we now move on to the biggest event of the summer, SummerSlam. Usually the time and place where the WWE decide to place a little bit more effort and thought into their proceedings, and in many ways it builds up to the upcoming WrestleMania.
Now, the Battleground PPV itself was definitely worth a watch, filled with very good and entertaining matches, but as always, this PPV was really designed to set up the next. So let’s get into potential plans for the upcoming SummerSlam.
Obviously the main event has already been decided, as Brock Lesnar sets to take on the legendary Undertaker, in what is being set up as Taker’s revenge on Brock for ending the streak. This has got a lot of mixed reaction from what I would call the “thinking fan” in the sense that if Taker does go over and beats Brock Lesnar, everything that has happened since WrestleMania 30 is meaningless.
I don’t totally disagree with that thinking, but the other side of that is, does Taker not want revenge? And how fitting it could be to have The Phenom be the one to beat the one, in 21 and 1! I am surprised this match is taking place at SummerSlam, since it’s such a headline match that could easily main event WrestleMania. That being said, there are rumours we will see round 3 at Mania. I honestly don’t know who is going to win, and for me, we all just need to enjoy what will most likely be The Undertaker’s last run in wrestling.
There is definitely a big fight feel about this match and there is an intensity about Taker that I haven’t seen for a long time. Let’s just hope his body can last.
In other SummerSlam news, there may be a six-man tag team match taking place, with Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper and a mystery new member of the Wyatt family potentially taking on Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns and Sting.
Any of these guys are capable of holding a main event match at SummerSlam on their own, but this could definitely be a great match, with great physicality and psychology also. I guess I would prefer to see Sting in singles competition, and maybe Roman take on Triple H (check my previous post about who should face Triple H at SummerSlam here), as those matches make sense and emphasise the importance of the superstars involved.
I guess a big match we’re about to see is Seth Rollins v John Cena. No idea if this will be for the title(s) or not. But seriously?! Just when we accepted Cena as the U.S. Champ, and finally see him out of the main event picture, he’s right back in. This seems again like a short sighted cry for ratings and Vince, creative as always, goes straight to Cena. I don’t want to see this match. I would much rather see Cena vs. Rusev vs. Owens vs. Cesaro for the title. As for Seth Rollins, there are always the likes of Sheamus, Owens, even Neville, to provide a fresh new and exciting feud for the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Again it feels like a pointless feud and match to put Cena in the spotlight to get ticket sales and ratings.
Those are the main matches I wanted to cover this week. I hope the focus on the Divas division continues to and from SummerSlam. It will also be interesting to see where Triple H will end up on the card, if anywhere.
Til next week.
