The Voice of Reason: Weekly Roundup

The Voice of Reason is back this week, after a WWE “special event” (apparently they’re not called pay-per views anymore) and a Monday Night Raw. The special event for June is obviously Money In The Bank, where we usually find out who will be the next WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

The special event itself was average if you ask me, with nothing overly spectacular. The biggest shock of the night happened in the first match, the MITB Ladder Match, with Sheamus picking up the briefcase, instead of the odds-on favourite, Roman Reigns. Sheamus has been a great heel upon his return, playing the tough bad guy who picks on other superstars. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but on the back of Raw it seems he may be forming a slow allegiance with The Authority.

So what happened to Roman Reigns? Inches away from the case when none other than the “new face of fear” Bray Wyatt made a hard hitting appearance with Sister Abigail. Wyatt vs. Reigns is a feud I have wanted to see for a long time, with shades of The Wyatt Family and The Shield shining through. The problem with this feud is that Wyatt is a big fan-favourite, meaning Roman is essentially the babyface who isn’t liked as much as the “heel”, but as seen this week on Raw, he is using pictures of Roman and his daughter.

This is a great idea making an interesting angle and keeping heat on Wyatt. It’ll be interesting to see in the coming month or so whether they are continuing the slow burn of Reigns or whether a heel turn is on the horizon – my guess and hope is a heel turn.

A decent match between Rollins and Ambrose to close the show, albeit fairly long. Another “dramatic” ending to the match where it looked like both superstars effectively grabbed the title at the same time. I spoke briefly about this on Twitter (@TheWWEVoiceless), that the commentators didn’t really sell this match.

Rollins had a surgeon like performance, hacking away at the left knee of Dean Ambrose. At no point did the commentary team have me on the edge of my seat worrying for Ambrose’s safety. I’m sorry but when someone drives a steel ladder into your knee, I don’t want to hear a mundane “oh no” like it was a closeline.

However, match of the night definitely goes to Kevin Owens vs. John Cena. These two put on one hell of a match, topping their first encounter and in contention for match of the year. Powerbombs, suplexes, moonsaults, and numerous close calls. Cena ends up getting a clean win, with Owens attacking him after they shake hands.

Great booking to keep heat on Owens and sets up a third and final match, hopefully at SummerSlam. Again, the commentators didn’t really sell this with JBL too busy selling “big match John” and Michael Cole too busy saying “oh no” to an emphatic spin powerbomb by Owens.

I think that the order of the matches really needs to be thought about more for these special events. Had Owens vs. Cena gone on first, I think it would have been better received. The ladder match should always go last, as theoretically, it is in the top three of important matches in the year (WrestleMania main event and Royal Rumble being the other two).

Owens played the villain role great again on Raw, picking up the win in a great match against Ziggler and then giving a powerbomb to MGK off the stage. No appearance from Cena.

So now we’re building to Battleground where, yes ladies and gentleman, we will see the beast incarnate, BROCK LESNARRR, face Seth Rollins, for the title. My prediction is Brock takes the title, to face a heel Roman at SummerSlam with a face Rollins to take on a heel HHH.

However, if Rollins is to hold the title, it’ll be interesting to see how he “does it on his own” as Brock is unlikely to lose, especially on his first match since WrestleMania.

Let’s just say I’m very excited for the potential SummerSlam we could have, as well as a good 4 weeks of Paul Heyman’s God like promos.

That’s all from me this week. Til next time.

Quick mention and shout out to the Prime Time Players, picking up the tag team titles at MITB in a win against The New Day (sucks). Definitely an outcome I was hoping for, their time is now, and I’m hoping for a long successful run. Congrats to those two.
