Last night’s RAW was a bit of a shocker, as Vince McMahon outright suspended Becky Lynch for 60 days and just replaced her with Charlotte Flair.
I am not ashamed to admit that my initial reaction was that I was pissed off because my thought was “so…the Women’s Royal Rumble doesn’t mean anything if Vince can just replace the winner with Charlotte”? It was almost as if the criticisms over Vince’s asinine decisions along with Kevin Dunn were brought on full display live on television, minus Dunn.
However, on second glance I (and many others) may have emotionally jumped the gun. No, Becky is not being removed from the match; it’s just going to be a Triple Threat match now with Ronda Rousey defending against both Becky and Charlotte, the women she screwed over at Survivor Series which led to Asuka becoming the Smackdown Women’s Champion.
But it’s curious now how you would get Becky back into the match. The most likely scenario would be that she would have to beat Charlotte at the Fastlane PPV coming up in order to do so. At this point, it’s a toss up who would emerge from Wrestlemania as the RAW Women’s Champion.
Still, this was lousy booking in my opinion. What the fans wanted was to see Becky vs. Ronda Rousey, but WWE is not at the point when they think that a one on one women’s match would be a big enough draw as a main event at the biggest show on their calendar year. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if WWE spins this match more as ‘part of’ the main event lumped in with the WWE and Universal title matches.
Where does this leave Asuka and the Smackdown Women’s Championship?
It would have made more sense to put Charlotte up against Asuka, a rematch from last year’s Wrestlemania which would have led to better booking in my humble opinion. The Empress looking to redeem herself after losing her undefeated streak to the Queen; the Queen looking to repeat her performance last year and showing she can beat Asuka again. It would have been more solid booking for both women’s titles.
So who would face Asuka at this point? I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to throw together a ladder match and have literally every female wrestler on Smackdown compete in it.
Pretty sure I did a better job than the WWE writers tasked with booking the women’s titles matches for Wrestlemania just now.
An average professional doing the 9-5 grind who really loves wrestling across all platforms. Here's hoping wrestlers finally get some basic workers rights in 2021.
