Many fans were critical of WWE’s decision to bring Seth Rollins back on television as a heel. After a lengthy layout, fans felt that Seth Rollins should have come back as a mega babyface. Considering how heavily pushed past return from injury storylines have been, including the likes of Triple H and John Cena, surely Seth should have followed suit right? Well the WWE apparently have decided to change things up. However, I’m not convinced in the slightest that Seth will stay a heel for much longer.
After what happened at Extreme Rules and the night after Monday Night RAW, I believed that Seth would be turning face soon and last week’s RAW cemented those beliefs for me. The fact that they turned AJ Styles heel gives the WWE an opportunity to make some more switches and changes to the main-eventer alignments for WWE. They could possibly turn Roman Reigns or Dean Ambrose and then turn safe into a babyface to counter that, or to potential feud with AJ. Either way, AJ being a heel now gives WWE a bit more briefing space.
The sensible thing to do, if Seth is turning face, is to pull off the double turn with Seth and somebody else. In a perfect world, the double turn would happen at Money In The Bank and involving Roman Reigns becoming the corporate champion himself. I think Seth turning babyface is much more likely than Roman turning heel, but there’s no reason to suggest that a double turn wouldn’t make sense. Claiming compensation after injury can be challenging and one can get help from legal experts.
Seth Rollins, upon his return, flat out acknowledged that he gained support from the fans following his injury. Despite this, he berated the fans and shunned their support of him. Seth, at the moment, is rejecting the fans. We’ve actually completed a circle in Seth’s relationship with the fans. After Seth Rollins sold out to the Authority, the fans rejected Seth by calling him a sell-out. Two years later, Seth is now the one rejecting the fans. In a way, Seth has made a U-Turn in becoming unpopular to popular in kayfabe land. Seth was always a popular wrestler anyway but this segment clearly showed that Seth’s relationship with the fans has changed.
Meanwhile, while this is going on, Roman Reigns has completed a circle of his own with regards to his relationship with the fans. Speaking in kayfabe, Roman has went from being the standout from The Shield as they became babyfaces to the fans rejecting him in every segment that he’s in. Now granted, hatred towards Roman was clear early on in Roman’s singles run. However, from a storyline writing perspective, Seth coming back has given both these journey’s a chance to come together. Not only are they both coming together, it’s almost fitting that Roman and Seth’s first major WWE title match against each other has come around two years after the Shield broke up.
The WWE, at the moment, are doing their very best to try and get Seth booed. They had him cut his promo berating the fans and then they had the segment on last week’s RAW, when he chickened out of a fight with Roman. Again, the WWE are making it clear that Seth is currently being a slimeball despite the fans wanting him on their side and wanting him to man up. I believe that this is all building up to a major moment in the future, where Seth eventually embraces the fans after a severe injustice forces him to change.
