Will Big Cass Be WWE’s Next Big Star?

At WrestleMania 33 and on the RAW after WrestleMania 33, we saw four NXT wrestlers get called up to the main roster. Baron Corbin debuted by winning the Andre The Giant memorial battle royal and Apollo Crews debuted in singles action on RAW. Then we got the call-up of the popular NXT tag team of Enzo Amore and Big Cass. When I saw this line-up of call ups, it became pretty obvious to me that the WWE were high on these men. Three of the men that were called up had the size and body of a man that Vince McMahon looks for in his top stars. Baron is a tall guy, Apollo is a very muscular guy and Big Cass is an extremely tall and lean guy. Baron’s already had his big moment at WrestleMania and Apollo’s currently embroiled in a feud with Sheamus. That leaves us with Big Cass, who is back to teaming with Enzo Amore.

From Payback to Extreme Rules, when Enzo Amore was out with an injury, WWE did a bit of singles experimentation with Big Cass. It’s not like Big Cass was just put in random matches throughout the time that Enzo was away. He had angles with Chris Jericho and cut promos on his own, getting a legitimate push as a singles star. Now that he’s back with Enzo, it’s back to tag team business as usual. However, his singles run did get me thinking. We only got a month of Cass as a singles star but whenever Enzo and Cass break up in the future (because it’s bound to happen) will Cass be able to get over at the level that many at the company are hoping that he will?

What works in Cass’ favour is his mic skills. His mic skills aren’t at the level of his tag team partner Enzo, but he’s been with Enzo enough to develop dialogue for himself. He will have no doubt picked up a thing or two while teaming with Enzo.

He’s also very charismatic in the ring, with an explosive in-ring style. I wouldn’t call him tremendous in the ring, but he’s got the type of move set that can get him over as a babyface. When he gets the hot tags for tag team matches, he’s usually able to keep the heat going up until the finish. That’s an important thing to factor in.

What works against Cass is that I don’t see Cass as being the type of person that can put on impressive long main event matches. Don’t get me wrong. Cass is fine when he’s either in a tag team or just doing short matches. However, the WWE demands long main event matches from it’s talent. They tried those sort of matches with Ryback and the Big Guy was not really suited for long matches. Roman Reigns is very similar, unless he’s working with a specific worker like AJ Styles that can pull a good match out of him. Big Cass has rarely been forced in a situation where he’s had to work a long singles match. If I were to try and get Big Cass over as a big star, I would keep his matches short and sweet.

Enzo-Amore-2

As much as it pains me to say it, Enzo Amore could also be someone that could prevent Cass’ rise to the top. I love Enzo Amore but it’s the fact that Enzo Amore is the more over act right now than Big Cass. Big Cass is fine on his own but Enzo Amore is great on his own. You add those two together, you’ve got a hell of an act. Without Enzo, can Big Cass really get over on his own?

I guess time will tell…
