Hello everyone, and welcome to the latest edition of Wrestle Chica!
This week I was thinking what would be best to write about, and thought I would start by writing a list of wrestlers that I know from the WWE and second on my list was Daniel Bryan. He was one of the first wrestlers that I got to know in the WWE when I was only watching it as Tybo needed to catch up for the week on our days off. He was the first wrestler whose music I knew and could guess correctly, much to Tybo’s delight that some of this was actually sinking in and I’m sorry to say this to Cena but he was actually the first wrestler I liked (much to Tybo’s hate, I was against him growing a beard but loved a guy with one!) so when I thought of all that, it got me thinking how does he do that, keep the non-wrestling fan watching and get them to become an actual fan like he did with me.
Now I know Daniel Bryan has been around a lot longer than I have known about him for and I have only ever known him as a face but I do genuinely believe that he brings a lot to the WWE that many other wrestlers don’t and some wish they did. When I started watching wrestling it was before the Yes Movement had started (Punk was actually starting the movement before he bitched out and left) and he was just a normal wrestler having matches that didn’t really mean anything yet he still got me to put my phone down and actually watch the match. I think this says a lot about him and the way he captivates the crowd.
I remember when the Yes movement officially started and he brought everyone out in the Yes t-shirts into the ring. Everyone went crazy chanting with him and were all wanting to tell the authority they weren’t going to listen to them anymore. I loved this as being a new fan to it at the time, I was loving who you’re supposed to and hating the authority and I loved that someone was standing up to them, and not only someone, but the little guy was! We were getting to see an underdog showing the authority that they didn’t have as much power as they thought and I loved that!
The first WrestleMania I watched live was WrestleMania 30 so I got to follow Daniel Bryan right though his storyline and watch him achieve the unachievable after everything he was put through that night. Hearing about him having to have two matches and beat Triple H first just to be able to get the chance to be in the match for the title I honestly thought there is no way this is happening, I thought it was going to be a short night for him and the movement was all for nothing. Watching him beat Triple H, I actually got excited and had to do the Yes chant with everyone because I was made up for him. This was the start of a unforgettable night and for the first time made me think “he’s going to do this, isn’t he?”
I may be a little biased when saying this, as it was my first ever live Wrestlemania but watching him win the titles and defeat all the odds made me so happy to watch. I found myself actually being happy and made up for him as I was completely invested and caught up in that story line. I think this is what the WWE are missing at the moment they don’t have someone like Daniel Bryan who, no matter what t-shirt you are wearing while watching either at home or at the arena or who you say your favourite wrestler is, as soon as his music hits you a long with everyone else watching are cheering Yes Yes Yes .
I think there are times when we do see this but you never get it as much as you do when Daniel Bryan comes out. Even if you look at now when we do see him it’s exactly the same. Even though he hasn’t been on our screens for so long he still gets that same welcome whether he is coming to the ring in wrestling gear or jeans, the WWE Universe loves him and I think that the WWE are missing this at the minute and that they need to have some sort of story like this where it is someone fighting against all the odds.
When Daniel Bryan came back after having to give up the title he fought so hard for (so that we could have a fighting champion only to shortly after get Brock Lesnar who we barely saw, never mind saw defending his title!) we got that feeling again and we got that whole underdog winning excitement back straight away.
At first when he entered himself into the IC title ladder match honestly I was gutted as I wanted him to be back at the top fighting for the WWE title again, but the more I thought about it the more I thought this could actually work. We are going to see him build this up to a better title and as a bonus we get to see him wrestle more as the WWE champ doesn’t have just any old match do they! To see him win again and get another WrestleMania moment was fantastic, you genuinely get caught up with it all and are so happy for him and it does make you feel good which is a feeling you don’t often get!
Unfortunately he was injured not long after and we had to see him give up yet another title to have a fighting champion, which this time we actually got as I think Ryback is doing a good job with the title (well before he got injured he was!) and I think this gave Ryback the chance he actually deserved which is always good to see! This then led to and unfortunately missing Daniel Bryan again and with no one there to be that underdog again.
At the minute I am really enjoying where the WWE are going and I am enjoying what they have done but there is something missing each week and I think that is Daniel Bryan. We are missing having this guy who everyone is rooting for, the guy who wanted to change the universe but was actually doing it! I’ve heard rumours that he’s never coming back and rumours that he is and I really do hope that we see him back on our screens sooner rather than later (and that’s not just on Tough Enough) as to be honest not only am I missing him I miss doing the Yes chant!
