Everyone at SLTD Wrestling has their own idea of that one dream match. That match that would have the fans slobbering for more and the legends on their feet. Now I know that most of us would pick the dream matches we never got to see, Sting vs Undertaker, Daniel Bryan vs Angle, Eddie vs HBK etc, but I wanted to focus on two superstars from two companies that never got to cross paths. My Wrestlemania dream match would be ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles vs ‘The Rated R Superstar’ Edge.
People might ask ‘why Edge?’ Even though he is a legend in the business, a lot of people don’t think he deserved the 11 World Heavyweight titles but should have been more mid-card. He was around in an era that really only had John Cena and Randy Orton to contend with, but his accomplishments cannot be frowned upon. Nor can his abilities in the ring, taking part in some of the most memorable matches in the history of the WWE.
His first match that truly showed he was main event status was his Wrestlemania 21: Money in the Bank Ladder Match. It included superstars like Chris Jericho, Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Christian and Kane. 10 months later Edge cashed in against Cena and captured his first ever WWE Title. If there is one match for me that showed just how good Edge was, it was a match on Smackdown between Edge and Eddie Guerrero Sept, 26, 2002. This match had everything from chairs, ladders, high spots and excellent technical wrestling. Edge won the match after delivering an Edgecution from the top of the ladder down to the ring. Both men received a standing ovation that night and it was truly justified.
Edge to me is one of the greatest superstars to work in the WWE. He could literally do it all from excellent mic-work to five-star matches with anyone on the roster. Edge chose to walk away at a time that was right for him after giving his all to the business. He is truly one of the greatest the WWE has ever seen, so how can he not go against ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles.
AJ Styles is, in my eyes, also one of the most underrated wrestlers in the last ten years. He is classed as one of the best independent wrestlers but he offers so much more. He, along with a few others, carried TNA on their shoulders through its most successful period. It speaks volumes to the man that when he was being underused the company actually struggled. He recently left TNA and joined the WWE after TNA lowered their valuation of him. AJ Styles is a 5 time TNA World Heavyweight champion, but he’s won over 50 titles across the world.
One of the best matches AJ Styles ever had was on Sept, 9, 2005. It is one of the greatest matches in TNA history, and somehow even saying that makes it feel like an understatement. It was between AJ Styles vs Christopher Daniels vs Samoa Joe. Christopher Daniels was the X-Division champion, Samoa Joe was undefeated thus far and AJ Styles had been screwed out of the title on numerous occasions. AJ shows his fantastic high spots in this match with a stunning springboard Shooting Star Press to the outside, and the Spiral Tap got a lookin which is a strong indicator of a big deal match. AJ Styles eventually pinned Daniels to win the title whilst Samoa Joe was unconscious. These three men carried TNA, but none other than AJ Styles showed just how good he could perform in the ring.
That is why I put these two classic wrestlers together. You have two wrestlers with outstanding technical ability that could pull off some excellent high spots. They are both decorated champions with so much experience and a feud between them could have been outstanding. Both are excellent mic workers and both work to make sure their companies get the best exposure, most of all you have two of the most underrated performers in the business.
