After taking a week off for personal reasons, I’m back, and honestly it’s a great time to be writing about wrestling.
NXT Takeover Brooklyn was a tremendous success. SummerSlam was a lot of fun with some great matches and a nice controversial ending. The Dudleys’ surprise return, a new member in the Wyatt family… I could go on and on. There’s certainly no shortage of material or inspiration right now.
But honestly…. I don’t want to write about any of that. I want to write about something far more important. Something that, for me, makes professional wrestling truly enjoyable…. Family.
Every WWE pay-per-view for the last year has been a mini-celebration in the Rogers home. We pack our little trailer full of family and friends month after month. My wife, an excellent cook, always has more than enough food prepared for everyone. And when you walk through our door, it doesn’t matter if you’re related to us or not…. you’re family. Even before we had a driveway everyone still showed up, parked near the road, and practically hopscotched their way across our yard to avoid the mud. All to watch professional wrestling.
Of course we all watch for different reasons. Some enjoy the company… some enjoy the food. At least one CLAIMS he comes to watch all the so called adults get caught up in the action and make fools of themselves. Regardless of motivations, we all get together and we have a blast. For a few hours, we laugh, we eat, we talk some light-hearted smack, and forget about our grown-up worries and problems and just enjoy the show.
Sure the WWE has its flaws…. Sometimes we see the same matches over and over again. Some of us groan a little (a LOT in some cases) when Cena overcomes the odds and kicks out of every finisher known to man. We give our opinions on what we think SHOULD have happened. But no matter the outcome, we all get together again the next month to do it all over again.
Without the family aspect of professional wrestling, I can’t say with absolute certainty that I would keep watching. Yeah we could all get together for UFC fights and watch people legitimately try and hurt one another. But personally I’d rather sit with my family and watch super athletes that are truly concerned about each other’s well being and pretend to fight each other.
Life is short…. And without friends and family, life is empty. It’s time to lighten up a little. Stop overthinking the WWE’s every decision and just enjoy the ride…. as weird and as goofy as it may get.

In memory of my aunt, Anne Cronon. A supporter of all my creative endeavors over the years…. Even one or two that, in hindsight, shouldn’t have been supported…. By anyone.
I love you Aunt Anne. Thank you for your love and support and thank you for the times you told me what I NEEDED to hear and not what I WANTED to hear. I’m a better man because of it.
