Welcome to my WWE Night of Champions Predictions! Night of Champions takes place tonight from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. There are seven matches announced to take place on the main card (not including the Pre-Show), and I don’t expect them to have enough time to add any more. If they do, however, expect a Ryback squash match.
I’m very interested in seeing who will be on the Announce Team tonight. I’ll be very disappointed if it just turns out to be Michael Cole and Josh Matthews (my least favourite announce team). Apparently, WWE have reached out to John “Bradshaw” Layfield about commentary, but it’s unknown whether or not he has accepted. Also, Jim Ross is in Boston, so there’s no shortage of talented commentators at their disposal. Hell, I’d mark out if Matt Striker returned to commentary.
My match predictions come in the order in which I think they will appear on the show.
Pre-Show Battle Royal to name #1 Contender for the United States Championship
I’m looking forward to this match. I do love a Battle Royal. It’s a very smart idea to put a Battle Royal on the Pre-Show, as opposed to a title match or a regular match, because they’re more exciting and draw viewers. As for a winner, I’m not too sure. Anyone that isn’t named Santino Marella would be enough for me I suppose. People who deserve it would be Tyson Kidd, Zack Ryder and Drew McIntyre. Out of the lot, I’d anticipate a Zack Ryder win. He’s been on quite a roll recently, so I expect him to win.
Winner: Zack Ryder
Randy Orton vs Dolph Ziggler
These guys have fought a few times in the last couple of weeks. Randy Orton beat Ziggler on Smackdown and they had a great match on Raw a few weeks ago, with Dolph Ziggler coming out on top. That’s basically how I see this one going. As Mr Money in the Bank, Dolph Ziggler needs to keep up his momentum with a win over the Viper.
He’s beaten him by holding the tights, but I’m hoping for a clean victory from WWE’s resident Show-Off at Night of Champions. The only alternative I can see is Dolph Ziggler losing to Orton and coming back to cash his Money in the Bank briefcase in later in the show. I don’t see it happening tonight, though. I predict a clean victory for Dolph Ziggler after a Zig-Zag.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Fatal-4-Way for the Intercontinental Championship: The Miz vs Rey Mysterio vs Sin Cara vs Cody Rhodes
This is a bit random. Obviously not the bits with Sin Cara, Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes, as they’ve had the mask feud for weeks, but putting them in an Intercontinental Championship match is a bit random. I always considered Miz’s inclusion in matches with these guys just filler: up until Cody Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on him that is.
I liked the way Rhodes came out on top on Raw. He hasn’t had much going for him lately and I’d like him to get a push. I’m not sure about an Intercontinental Championship push though. He’s already held the belt twice this year. I don’t even want to consider Sin Cara winning this one. Or Rey Mysterio. I don’t think Cara deserves it, and I think Mysterio needs to earn his title opportunities. I think The Miz has had a good run with the gold thus far, so I see no reason for him to lose the gold yet. Miz wins via a Skull Crushing Finale on Sin Cara.
Winner (and still Intercontinental Champion): The Miz
Divas Championship: Layla (c) vs Kaitlyn
I have nothing to say about this. If Kaitlyn, who doesn’t have one ounce of talent when it comes to mic-skills, wins the Divas Championship, then I will have officially lost all hope for the division. End of story.
Winner (and still Divas Champion): Layla
World Heavyweight Championship: Sheamus (c) vs Alberto Del Rio
Once again, we’re forced to watch Sheamus defend the title against Alberto Del Rio on Pay-Per-View, and I don’t understand why. It hasn’t exactly been the best feud, and the matches certainly haven’t been spectacular. Do WWE really have that little faith in their Smackdown roster, that they need to recycle the same stuff, month after month? Apparently so.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Alberto Del Rio is not World Heavyweight Championship material. I’m not a fan of his work, and I really don’t want him to win the Championship. I don’t see any feud opportunities for Del Rio after he wins, so I’m sticking with Sheamus. Sheamus either makes Del Rio tap out to the Texas CloverLeaf, or uses a Brogue Kick while the referee isn’t looking.
Winner (and still World Heavyweight Champion): Sheamus
WWE Tag Team Championship: R-Truth & Kofi Kingston (c) vs Kane & Daniel Bryan
Finally, we have an interesting (and hilarious) tag team in the WWE. The combined work of Daniel Bryan and Kane over the last month or so has been absolute gold, and I recall saying a few weeks ago that they would make a great tag team. Now it’s their opportunity, as they are the #1 contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championship.
The team, or at least the championship reign, of Kofi Kingston and R-Truth has gotten very stale for me. They haven’t really done anything notable over the months that they’ve held the titles. They come out, they talk on commentary, they stare-down the Prime Time Players, they talk about Little Jimmy and it got old, a LONG time ago.
Daniel Bryan and Kane deserve this win. They’ve got great chemistry together and could be a great tag team in the company. I predict a win from Kane and Daniel Bryan after a chokeslam.
Winners (and new WWE Tag Team Champions): Kane and Daniel Bryan.
United States Championship: Antonio Cesaro (c) vs Battle Royal Winner
Antonio Cesaro has only held the Championship for a few weeks now, and if WWE want to preserve any of the prestige the title still has after it’s run with Santino Marella (if there is any), then Cesaro needs to retain. Also, no matter who is in the Battle Royal, I’m not sure if there are any Superstars who are ready to beat him yet. He needs to hold on to the championship for now.
Winner (and still United States Champion): Antonio Cesaro
WWE Championship: CM Punk (c) vs John Cena
I have no doubt in my mind that this will be the match of the night. Their previous bouts have been nothing short of 5*, so expect something big from both John Cena and CM Punk tonight. There is a lot more on the line in this championship bout than the title. If John Cena wins, then I think CM Punk’s heel turn and recent alliance with Paul Heyman will have been for nothing.
They can ruin things quickly in this one. If CM Punk wins, John Cena won’t lose any credibility and it will prove that CM Punk is in fact the Best in the World, which is what I believe we need to see. Although I think CM Punk can beat John Cena cleanly, I don’t think it will go that way this time.
If rumours are true, a stable lead by CM Punk and Paul Heyman is in the works. Names thrown around to appear in this stable are Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, etc. That would be an epic stable, and if it’s actually happening, then it should happen tonight.
CM Punk will beat John Cena, with the help of Paul Heyman (and possibly Dean Ambrose with other superstars in their stable, hopefully Drew McIntyre!)
Winner (and still WWE Champion): CM Punk
I got 6/8 of my predictions from WWE Summerslam correct, so hopefully I’m equally as successful tonight.
