So in this series of WWMD’s, we look at potential returners to WWE, what impact they could have, what they could do and what talent they could help get over. We’ll also have a look at their run in WWE, starting at the Rumble and culminating in a match at WrestleMania. So, with that in mind, let’s get looking at today’s returner : CM Punk.
What have they done in the past?
CM Punk is wrestling. It’s a simply put like that – if there is an accolade out there, then Punk will have won it. He has seen it all and done it all. He has a cult like following from his work in the Indies before transistioning to WWE and then exploded into action. His “Pipebomb Promo” really lit the fuse underneath Punk in the eyes of newer WWE fans. However, his work on SmackDown! and on ECW on Sci-Fi let people knew he was the real deal. He, unfortunately, had a well documented exit from WWE and has dabbled in MMA too.
What impact could they have?
Astronomical impact. The sort of impact you saw in Deep Impact. It would literally shake WWE to the core if CM Punk returned. He could go straight into the main event picture, he could propel the US or IC Titles even higher. The return of Punk could see him do more than wrestle – his commentary work is amazing. We could see some amazing promos from Punk – anything he does would turn to gold. Looking back at wrestlers careers, they can be defined by single matches. Punk could easily make multiple careers, he could make normal wrestlers look like super stars.
Who could they work with?
Anyone. The match ups for Punk make me drool a little – Punk vs Styles, Punk vs Samoa Joe, Punk vs Finn Balor, Punk vs Seth Rollins to name a few. However, controversially for me, the match I’d love to see is Punk vs Triple H. Yes, Triple H is now classed as part time talent, but this match would sell WWE Network subscriptions. It would sell merchandise, it would sell anything they put their faces on. On the flip side, Punk could be used to put over upcoming talent. Take someone like Baron Corbin – stuck and floating on the periphery for a long time. A feud with Punk would benefit him a hell of a lot.
