Hello and welcome to an edition of WWMD that I’ve been thinking about for a while. One of the things I miss about the “Attitude Era” of WWE is the unpredictability. Anything could happen at any time so you had to tune and watch it. That has disappeared recently, which is why I would introduce a “new” championship : the WWE Internet Championship. Let’s get down to the reasons why WWE needs this belt.
Defended 24/7
One of the belts I miss the most is the old WWF Hardcore Championship. A title which was defended in Hardcore matches and be on the line anywhere. There were matches in Theme Parks, WrestleMania PPVs and anywhere else you could imagine. The rules of the title saw it kick star the WCW Invasion Angle in 2001. This meant that the title could crop up at anywhere at any time. You had to stay tuned to see if it was going to appear. This lead to a lot of fun matches, a lot of wrestlers getting air time and some fun. I don’t think the Hardcore nature would go down well with the PG shows, but the 24/7 concept would.
Defended everywhere and anywhere
To be truly unique, the belt needs to show up everywhere. Raw, SmackDown, 205Live, NXT, House Shows, WWE’s YouTube channel. You name it, it should be there. It would give the title holder massive exposure, get the belt travelled round. It could help push a wrestler to the next level. Equally, it helps boost the unpredictability of it. With a 24/7 title, people will get hooked into it and want to know what happens and when it happens. In the day of today’s social media, “matches” could take place on the road easily.
Defended by anyone
For me, this gives the belt a unique selling point – make the title inter-gender. With the interest in the Mixed Match Challenge, Becky Lynch wrestling James Ellsworth and equality for all, have women wrestling men (and men wrestling women). Likewise, this would help with the unpredictability of the title and when it could appear. WWE is missing a golden opportunity missing out on inter-gender wrestling. It happens a lot in the UK Indies and should be used elsewhere. Done right, inter-gender wrestling is a gold mine which can be tapped.
We need the Internet
The Internet Title can help a lot of wrestlers get over more. Wrestlers from Raw, SmackDown or NXT could appear anywhere. Yes there are drawbacks, however the advantages of it vastly out weigh them. As a result, we need the WWE Internet Title.
